A full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was born at 2:08 AM on Friday, April 20th. Barbaro's dam, La Ville Rouge, gave birth to a 148-pound bay (reddish brown with black mane and tale) colt at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington Kentucky.
Mill Ridge Farm is also the brithplace of Barbaro and his first brother, a yearling recently named "Nicanor" (a name of Greek origin).
In the April 29 issue of The Blood-horse, owner Roy Jackson talks about naming Barbaro's brother Nicanor: "we named him Nicanor after the foxhound to the left of the one named Barbaro in this family painting. We’re not sure what the name means. Choosing a name from the painting was lucky once with Barbaro, so we decided to do the same thing." The painting is a French lithograph believed to be from the 1800's.
La Ville Rouge and Barbaro's sire, Dynaformer, are expected to mate again later this Spring.
