2007 Breeders Cup Juvenile champ War Pass will make his three-year-old debut in a one-mile Allowance at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. The undefeated Nick Zito trainee remains a pivotal contender on the 2008 Kentucky Derby trail, and his closest and most familiar rival, Pyro, rocketed to the top of the Derby contenders list after his stretch-running Risen Star Stakes victory this month. Not to drop an H-bomb on the Pyro-mania, but as a two-year-old, War Pass beat Pyro all three times the two opponents met--defeating Pyro by a combined 13 lengths. Giddyup.
The Allowance race immediately follows Gulfstream's main event Sunday, the star-studded Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes.
Undefeated in four career starts last year, War Pass would go on to win the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Two-Year Old Male of 2007.
After his Allowance conditioning, War Pass will target two graded Kentucky Derby preps, the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby (March 15th)--where War Pass and Pyro may meet for the first time as three-year-olds--and the Grade I Wood Memorial Stakes (April 5th).
