Mario Pino has piloted Hard Spun in all eight of his career starts, helping guide the Danzig colt to five wins, but trainer Rick Porter and trainer Larry Jones will replace Pino with Garrett Gomez in the Belmont Stakes. The connections say Pino failed to follow their plan to have Hard Spun sit several lengths behind the leaders in the Preakness -- a style of running that the headstrong Hard Spun has never even shown before.
Bloodhorse reports that Porter explained, "I feel badly for Mario, as he is truly a nice guy, but he made a mistake. He didn’t think that by moving him out in the clear, he’d have trouble rating."
After staying in range of a fast pace set by Xchanger and Flying First Class in the Preakness, Hard Spun finished a respectable third to Curlin, and that only two weeks after finishing second best to Street Sense's closing rail-trip in the Kentucky Derby.
