Three-year-old colt Yankee Bravo overcame post 11 of 12 to win the $150,000 California Derby with a powerful stretch run under jockey Alex Solis on Sunday. Paddy Gallagher was the winning trainer. Yankee Bravo is now three-for-three with the one-length Cal Derby win, and after the race he stuck a feather in his cap... but left racing fans in suspense for the much anticipated macaroni-calling.
The California Derby, run on Golden Gate's synthetic track, manufactured by Tapeta Footings, was Yankee Bravo's first race over synthetic. Yankee Bravo's next start is undetermined, but the colt is nominated to the Triple Crown and Santa Anita Derby. Early nominations for the 2008 Triple Crown closed January 19.
