Nine-year-old The Tin Man made his fourth straight win when returning from a seven-month layoff to take the Grade 1 Shoemaker Breeders Cup Mile. One of last year's top turf horses, The Tin Man has now joined the ranks of John Henry and Desert Native as one of Hollywood Park's oldest stakes winners. Regular rider Victor Espinoza was in the irons for the win for trainer Richard Mandella.
Longshot Get Funky was second, with Willow O Wisp third.
Willow O Wisp took the lead and set the pace, with James Sadler trainee Get Funky stalking. The Tin Man kept the leaders in range from third. All three were game to contest the win, with The Tin Man prevailing by 3/4 of a length, and Get Funky nosing Willow O Wisp out of second. The winner paid $9.00. The $1 exacta paid $74.80.
Upcomer Kip Deville, who had won three straight races, traveled inside of The Tin Man at fourth until fading out of contention shortly after the half-mile.
