Doug O'Neill trainee Great Hunter won the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. Highly regarded as a two-year-old last season, he finished third in the 2006 Breeders Cup Juvenile and may be Keeneland bound on the 2007 Kentucky Derby trail.
From off the pace, Great Hunter and Corey Nakatani caught up with front runner Saint Paul in the stretch, driving to a 1 1/4 length victory. Setting a strong pace for trainer Bob Baffert and rider Alex Solis, Saint Paul was never content with second to Scat Thief. Sam P stalked those two front-runners from third for most of the way and caught second, while Saint Paul mustered third and Scat Thief faded off the board.
Great Hunter will probably skip the Santa Anita Derby, where connections want to run Liquidity.
