In a thrilling stretch run at the 132nd running of the Grade 1Preakness Stakes, Robby Albarado and Curlin made a determined run at Calvin Borel and Street Sense, who split foes in the stretch to drive away with the lead, only to get caught by Curlin at the wire. The Steve Asmussen trainee, owned by Stonestreet, Padua, and Midnight Cry Stables beat Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense by a head in the 1 3/16 mile event.
As in the 133rd Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, the top two finishers looked the best in the Preakness, driving away from the rest of the field by several lengths. Derby runner-up Hard Spun took over the lead in the backstretch, and once overcome, dug in for third. Nick Zito trainee CP West was fourth.
Curlin has been an enigma in this year's Triple Crown. The colt was unraced at two-year-old, and although he beat horses by an impressive number of lengths in each of his only three races before the Kentucky Derby, he was never pressed to show how fast he could be. In the Kentucky Derby he finshed third in spite of a troubled trip. At the Preakness Stakes he proved he could compete against fast horses, with a final time of 1:53.46, Curlin won the Preakness by matching the fastesttime in the Stakes history, equaled before by Louis Quatorze and Tank's Prospect .
