Curlin dominates historic Arkansas Derby Print E-mail

Steve Asmussen became the first trainer to win five races in one day at Oaklawn, when Curlin won the 71st running of the million-dollar Arkansas Derby by a record 10 1/2 lengths. The winning chestnut colt piloted again by Robby Albarado is now undefeated in three dominant performances.

Curlin began racing only this year, breaking his first race by 12 lengths when Helen Pitts was his trainer. He was then purchased by a partnership headed by Padua Stables and Stonestreet Stables, with Steve Asmussen to train. His first start for Asmussen was the Rebel Stakes at oaklawn, where he won by 5 1/4 lengths.

Curlin will be getting more experience on the race track the first Saturday in May, at the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby.

Storm in May was the $12.60 place finisher. Todd Pletcher trainee Deadly Dealer went off as second choice behind Curlin, and finished third in his first try over 7 furlongs.
