San Felipe winner Cobalt Blue was clear ahead in the lane of the $75,000 Alydar Stakes when Awesome Gambler shot by like a bullet to win the 1 1/8 mile contest by two lengths. Awesome Gambler is trained by Caesar Dominguez, and Joseph Telamo was in the irons.
The winner paid $9.20 and turned in a final time of 1:50.25.
Awesome Gambler broke his maiden in his previous race on April 28, a 48k Maiden at 1 1/16 miles over Hollywood Park's all-weather track. He took second in both of his 2006 juvenile starts.
Victor Espinoza was on board the Doug O'Neill-trained Cobalt Blue. Freesgood trained by William Currin and ridden by Mike Smith took third.
