The $100,000 1 1/16 mile Doubledogdare was captured by Patrick Biancone trainee Asi Siempre, who was piloted by Garret Gomez at Keeneland on Wednesday. Although the five-year-old gray mare had not raced since last November, she went off as a heavy favorite at 80 cents for every dollar bet on her to win.
Asi Siempre's five-and-a-half month layoff followed a loss to the now-retired Round Pond in the Breeders Cup Distaff, a race where Asi Siempre was disqualified from second to fourth. The Doubledogdare field shrank to five entries when Mo Cuishle was scratched out by Todd Pletcher, the winning trainer of the last two Doubledogdare Stakes.
Asi Siempre was patient at the back of the field before accelerating into the stretch and winning with a determined closing drive. Patrick Biancone's other entry, Pyramid Love, led the way with a drifty trip around the first turn and was able to hang onto second. Warrior Girl, the longest shot on the board at 29.30 was never far behind and took third. Soul Search, who took second to Asi Siempre in the Spinster last season at Keeneland, was carried out a bit by Pyramid Love at the first turn and finished fourth. Barclay Tagg's entry, Dance Away Capote, started awkwardly and pressed the pace until tiring before the stretch to finish last.
