Indian Blessing--bred for her skills in magic, and piloted by Garrett Gomez for trainer Bob Baffert--held off a determined Proud Spell to narrowly escape defeat in the Grade III Silverbullet Day Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. The $200,000, 1 1/16 mile race for three-year-old fillies was won in 1:43.75. Larry Jones trainee Proud Spell finished second under jockey Gabriel Saez. The $1 Exacta paid $7.80. Highest Class was third, for a $31.60 Trifecta; and Jolie the Cat completes the Superfecta at $54.80. |

Monterey Jazz and jockey David Flores took the A-Train wire to wire in Santa Anita's Grade II Strub Stakes on Saturday, winning by 4 1/2 lengths. The four-year-old Craig Dollase trainee put away the $300,000 miler in 1:32.62. Monterey Jazz returned $5.80 to win. Betting favorite Tiago closed in for second, and the Exacta paid back $16.60 for every winning dollar. |

Richard Mandella trainee Crown of Thorns won the Robert B Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. Coast Guard, trained by David Hofmans, filled out the Exacta for $8.10. Indian Sun was third for trainer Dan Hendricks in the small field of five. Meal Penalty--whatever the heck that means--grabbed the lead quickly, only to be beaten for third or fourth in the final furlong. See, even he couldn't stand to hear the name "Meal Penalty" anymore. |

Barrier Reef dueled with Roman Emperor to win the $100,000 Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday. Alan Garcia navigated Barrier Reef for trainer Thom Albertrani. The winner from Darley's stable paid $12.80. Texas Wildcatter fills out the Trifecta in third; and Spanky Fischbein finishes worst than 2nd for the first time, taking fourth. The $2 Exacta paid $54.00, the $2 Tri paid $278.50. The final time for the 1 1/16 mile contest was 1:44.77. |

Three-year-old colt Yankee Bravo overcame post 11 of 12 to win the $150,000 California Derby with a powerful stretch run under jockey Alex Solis on Sunday. Paddy Gallagher was the winning trainer. Yankee Bravo is now three-for-three with the one-length Cal Derby win, and after the race he stuck a feather in his cap... but left racing fans in suspense for the much anticipated macaroni-calling. |
