Profile of Hard Spun Print E-mail

A son of Danzig, Hard Spun raced wide from the nine hole and lost his first race in five starts at the one mile Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on President's Day.

In Hard Spun's three-year-old debut at Fair Grounds on January 13, 2007, he won his first graded stakes--and his first race around two turns--by 6 1/2 lengths. In that race the colt claimed the lead right away and never had a sustained threat catch him. Teuflesberg made attempts in the backstretch, but as the Daily Racing Form reported, Hard Spun would have none of it.

"Every time that horse on the outside came to him he just took off," said regular jockey Mario Pino. "I never had to ask him."

Pennsylvania-based--like Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, and Barbaro--Hard Spun's winning margins have ranged from 5 to 8 3/4 lengths. His trainer is Larry Jones and he races in the silks of Fox Hill Farms for owner Rick Porter. (Note: The DRF report mistakenly identified Makeithapencaptain's owner, Robert L. Beck, as Hard Spun's owner.)

Last fall the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the buzz on hard Spun, and not only from his own connections:

"I got your Super Horse - I raced against him," Chuck Zacney, managing partner of the group that owned Afleet Alex, said this week, talking about a 2-year-old named Hard Spun who debuted at Delaware Park on Oct. 22, winning by 8 1/2 lengths. "I saw him in the paddock. He looked like a 3-year-old or a 4-year-old, not a 2-year-old. He was intimidating, and he showed it on the track."

"He's the best 2-year-old I've ever ridden," said jockey Mario Pino, who has been on over 5,800 winners in his 27-year career. "It was an awesome feeling. I can't wait to get back on him."
