At the Mint Jubilee Gala the Friday night before this year's Kentucky Derby, the saddle of last year's winner, Barbaro, was purchased by the colt's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson for $220,000. Proceeds from the sell of the saddle donated by Barbaro's rider, Edgar Prado, will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, which currently helps 58 disabled jockeys by supporting such needs as assisted living and nursing care, rehabilitation, or making a home or automobile accesible to the handicapped. The saddle will be displayed in the Kentucky Derby Museum at Louisville, Kentucky.
Dwight Manley, manager of the National Jockeys Guild, was actually awarded the high bid on Barbaro's saddle, but when the Jacksons expressed that they thought they had won the auction, Manley decided to let them purchase it for the auction price and requested that they let it be displayed in a museum. Manley also donated $80,000 to the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund, making the total raised $300,000.
